Essential Tips to Boost Performance and Productivity

It’s National ‘Clean Out Your Computer Day,’ so we’ve gathered some tips and tricks to help you refresh your system and boost productivity!

Beyond some quick and free ways to tidy up your computer, we’ll also cover a few component upgrades, like RAM, CPUs, and graphics cards, that could significantly improve performance.

1. Physically Clean Your Computer

When was the last time you gave your computer a thorough cleaning? A simple cloth and some compressed air can make a world of difference. Start by wiping down the outside to assess just how dusty things are. For internal cleaning, carefully unplug your system and place it on a flat surface. Open up the casing (screws or clips are usually straightforward, but Google or YouTube tutorials can help), and use compressed air or a camera lens blower to remove dust inside. Once you’re done, reassemble and reconnect everything—your computer should already feel fresher!

2. Clear Out Your Email Inbox

While a full inbox isn’t the main cause of a sluggish computer, it certainly doesn’t help. Take a few minutes to delete unnecessary emails, like that old discount voucher from last summer. You’ll feel more organised and lighten your digital load.

3. Remove Unused Programs

Your computer may be holding onto programs you installed ages ago but never use. If you haven’t opened them in a while, uninstalling them can free up storage space, allowing your essential programs to run more smoothly.

4. Turn Off Programs That Run at Start-Up

Does your computer greet you with a wave of programs every time you turn it on? Many apps are set to launch on start-up by default. Head to your settings and disable this for anything but essential programs—Spotify, for instance, is notorious for slowing things down when set to launch at start-up.

5. Upgrade Your Hardware

If you’re ready to invest in more than just cleaning, consider a hardware upgrade. A new CPU, RAM, or GPU can make a substantial difference in your computer’s performance for years to come. Check your task manager to see if any parts are underperforming. If so, our direct sales division, Bytestock, has an extensive range of replacement and upgrade parts at up to 70% off MSRP, backed by a 5-Year Warranty*.
