Strengthen Your Digital Security: Tips for Passwords

Even today, it’s surprising how many people still rely on insecure methods, like writing passwords on sticky notes. Research by LastPass revealed that 50% of people admit to using the same password across multiple accounts—a habit that puts personal and business data at risk.

In light of World Password Day, here are some tips to help you create strong, secure passwords:

1. Use Unique Passwords for Every Account
   While it may seem obvious, every account should have a unique password. One of the easiest ways to achieve this is by using a password generator. Generators allow you to set the length and complexity of the password, providing a random mix of letters, numbers, and special characters for maximum security.
2. Try a Password Manager
   Password managers securely store all your passwords in one place, so you don’t have to remember each one. All you need is a secure master password. Many password managers also let you share passwords with others without revealing the actual password and allow you to revoke access when needed.
3. Enable Multifactor Authentication
   If available, enable multifactor authentication (MFA) for added security. MFA requires an extra step to verify your identity, such as a one-time code or Face ID, making it harder for anyone to access your account, even if they know your password.
4. Avoid Sharing Passwords Directly
   If you must share a password, like for a joint account or business tool, avoid sharing both the username and password together in the same place. Using a password manager to share credentials is a safer alternative, and remember to change the password once it’s no longer needed.
5. Avoid 'Remember Me' Options
   Avoid using “stay logged in” or “remember me” options on shared devices. If someone else has access to your device, they could easily access your accounts without needing a password. Also, these options can autofill passwords, which may allow a hacker to change your credentials without you knowing.
